[livejournal.com profile] verdande_mi asked: what is the oldest thing you own and what does it mean to you?

A set of furniture dated to the early 19th century; a desk, a chest of drawers with a mirror attached and four chair. From the beginning they were pale green with gold details, but at the time I got them unfortunately only two of the chair had the original paint left, the rest had been painted white.

My grandmother (born in 1913) had three aunts who ran a boarding house in the 1920’s. She always spent her summers with them, something she loved as her own mother was very strict. Her then unmarried aunts had a much more fun-loving approach to life and taught my grandmother how to dance charleston and cut her hair short and generally saw to it that my grandmother had a really good time. The room my grandmother always slept in had these furnitures and when the aunts stopped with the house boarding, they gave them to my grandmother. As a child they stood in my grandparent’s guest room, but I was gifted to them on my 16th birthday. I’ve loved them all my life and I still remember the thrill of having them. Nowadays the chest of drawers and two chairs stands in our hall and the desk is the permanent home of my sewing machine.

(Originally there was also a commode in the set, but my grandmother gave it to her brother at some point and I have never seen it.)

There are still plenty of empty spots if you want to ask me anything here!

This a really cool and interesting answer to this question . I don't think I have anything that old but that's quite a history.

Thank you! My husband brought some furniture that is even older, like a Regency sofa, but I didn't Count them as i don't really have an emotional attachement to them. :)

It's nice to have things with a history. :) My parents has a couple of really old stuff, like a big clock from the 1750's. :)

How lovely! Can you post a picture? I'd love to see these pieces. (Sad about the chairs, though.)

I can take pics; one day when I have cleaned off everything that is on top of the drawers which really shouldn't be there... :)

Go Grandma!

Thank you:) I chose this one as it features one my fave hats of hers. Also cloche hats suit me and I am very desirous of it and the rest of her wardrobe!
